Grapplers, Get Off Your Knees To practice submission wrestling or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, starting from your knees is very unrealistic in my opinion. One person usually flops to guard or they struggle for the takedown while dancing the famous Jiu Jitsu knee tango. I have competed in a few different arenas and I have never started from my knees, nor have I ever found myself in the position of being knee to knee with my opponent. If your specialty is BJJ or submission wrestling, by god, learn to get it to the ground. I understand a lot of it has to do with safety issues, but learning how to fall is an integral part of grappling. You could also drill the takedown half speed about 5000 times before full acceleration. If you choose not to start from your feet I think the next best thing would be to start from guard or mount or crossbody, anything but your knees. Win, lose or draw... train hard and get in the ring. |
